Herramientas del Poder(2021) on view at Bronx Calling: The Fifth AIM Biennial

  • The Bronx Museum of Arts 1040 Grand Concourse Bronx, NY, 10456 United States (map)

Herramientas del Poder(2021) is a durational performance exploring the tension between servitude and self-liberation. The artist stands in a gallery wearing all white while they dig inside of their mouth, using one hand at a time, repeating “Patria y Vida.” This piece is in response to the peaceful manifestations of J11 in Cuba, and to the artist's interrogation at the Ministry of Immigration and Foreigners in Havana, May of 2018, after participating in Cuba’s first alternative biennial, 00Bienal de La Habana.

From November 10, 2021, to March 20, 2022, the Bronx Museum presents Bronx Calling: The Fifth AIM Biennial showcasing the work of 68 early career artists from the 2018 and 2019 cycles of the Bronx Museum’s AIM Fellowship program. Co-curated by Ian Cofre (Director, PS 122 Gallery) and Eva Mayhabal Davis (Co-Director, Transmitter), the fifth edition of Bronx Calling considers the multiple crises of health, grief, the environment, and identity that define our contemporary moment.
